Ankou                                                                  Back to Ghosts

Ankou is an ancient word for a ghost that guards graveyards. In some parts of
older Europe, whenever a new cemetery was built, legends state it was
common to bury a person alive in the first grave, so a ghostly guardian would
be created. This Ankou would then protect the cemetery.

The Ankou are thought to give that "shiver," that feels like you are being
watched...maybe so one doesn't walk over a grave.
